About the Directors

Renee Quinlan, comes to us from Grapevine, Texas. She is a graduate of Grapevine High school and The University of Texas at Arlington and holds a degree in Music Education. Her honors include: all-state flute player, graduating Magna Cum Laude and making the dean’s list every semester. While at The University of Texas at Arlington, she was a member of the Wind Ensemble and was the principle flute player in the concert band and served as a colorguard staff member. She completed her student teaching at Grapevine High School and Cross-Timbers Middle School under the supervision of Steve Andre, and Jolette Wine. Mrs. Quinlan has performed with top performing groups including the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps and Insignia Independent Winterguard.
Mrs. Quinlan began her career in 2004 at JJ Pearce high school in Richardson ISD. She taught the high school band and colorguard as well as beginner classes. During her years at JJ Pearce, the marching band made an appearances at the Texas State Marching contest. Recently, she was the director of bands at Forte JH in Azle, Texas. During her stay in Azle, the Forte band program achieved multiple UIL sweepstakes. She has also taught at L.D. Bell High School and Birdville High School. While at L.D. Bell they were a Grand National finalist as well as a UIL state champion. During her years at Birdville, the Winterguard received many awards including medaling at WGI power regionals.
Mrs. Quinlan is very excited to be joining the Tidwell team! She currently resides in Fort Worth with her husband Matt and nine year old daughter named Valerie. They have three dogs, Riley, Lucy and Ellie.

Rothman Tafel
Mr. Tafel is an assistant band director at Tidwell Middle School in Northwest ISD. Rothman comes from Bedford, Texas. He is a graduate of Trinity High School and the University of North Texas where he earned his bachelor's degree in Music Education. While at UNT, Rothman studied Clarinet with Deborah Fabian, performed in the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and Green Brigade Marching Band. He student taught at Byron Nelson High School and Tidwell Middle School with Jed Weeks and Ashley Kahler. Rothman has performed in the Drum Corps International circuit with Forte Drum and Bugle Corps, The Academy and the Santa Clara Vanguard.
Mr. Tafel taught at Sulphur Springs Middle School prior to coming to Tidwell. He taught the Non-Varsity band, beginner woodwind and low brass classes and the high school marching band. During his time, the Sulphur Springs band program earned several superior UIL ratings in both Marching and Concert Band. Mr. Tafel is currently on the brass staff at the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps where he teaches low brass.
Rothman resides in Denton, Texas with his girlfriend of seven years, Emily and their two cats, Lily and Oli.

John Bingaman
Mr. Bingaman is the Percussion Director at Byron Nelson High School and Tidwell Middle School in Northwest ISD. Prior to his recent appointment at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas, Mr. Bingaman was the percussion director at John Horn High School in Mesquite, TX. The John Horn Drumline experienced notable success with consistent top finishes in the HEB Drumline Contest, the Plano Drumline Competition and the Lone Star Drumline Contest while also being awarded with cation awards. The Jaguar Drumline won the Lonestar Drumline Contest 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014. The drumline also placed third at the 2012 PASIC festival in the standstill division and won the award for best bass line. At the TMEA convention, John Horn was represented with three all-state percussionist in 2013, two in 2014, and two in 2015.
Prior to his appointment in Mesquite, Mr. Bingaman was the percussion instructor at Allen High School in Allen, TX with the Allen Escadrille which attended the Tournament of Roses Parade in 2006 and was awarded the Sudler Shield Award. Mr. Bingaman holds a Bachelor drefess from the University of Louisana where he studied with Larry Anderson. Mr. Bingaman competed at eh PASIC in the multi-tenor division placing 2nd in 1996, 4th as a freshman and winning the multi-tenor division in 1998.
Mr, Bingaman also played thirteen seasons as a percussionist with the Allen Philharmonic Orchestra where he has been a section percussionist as well as being featured with a marimba concerto in 2004. He is also an active drumset player, adjudicator, and clinician in the DFW area serving on staffs such as the “Roll” Models Percussion Summer Camps and the North Texas Middle School Percussion Camp.
